About Banja Kulaši

From Roman legions to modern medicine

A balneological and rehabilitation spa in the heart of unspoiled nature, with a tradition of 135 years.

Who we are

Nature and medicine in one place

Banja Kulaši is a balneological and rehabilitation spa resort in Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The name of the spa conceals an ancient secret of its healing properties, and the tradition of using its waters dates back to Roman times.

For decades, our experts have combined natural resources — high-pH alkaline mineral water and our own healing mud — with modern medical therapies. Our goal is to give every guest the most effective programmes for preserving health, achieving complete physical regeneration and improving the body’s vital functions.

Alongside our medical programmes, Banja Kulaši offers a wide range of wellness facilities, including thermal pools, saunas, steam baths and relaxation areas. Whether you are recovering from an injury, receiving treatment for a chronic condition or simply seeking relief from everyday stress, you will find a safe and welcoming place for every generation.

Tradition confirmed in 1890

The same water tested by Viennese physicians

“Early in May, my new spa, or ilidža, was opened in Kulaši… whose effectiveness last year relieved visitors of various illnesses — and which was verified by Dr Ludwig and an expert commission from Vienna and approved by the High Government.”

Ibrahim Bey Bašagić, advertisement published in Sarajevo, 1890

This record is not merely part of our history; it is the foundation of the trust we have been building for 135 years. The same water is used today in modern therapeutic protocols, with the same dedication to our guests’ health.

Scientific validation

The SGS Institut Fresenius standard, 2016

We do not speak about the healing properties of our water based on impressions, but on precise laboratory results. Germany’s SGS INSTITUT FRESENIUS, accredited by DAkkS, carried out a complete medicinal-water analysis (“Heilwasseranalyse”) to the criteria of the Deutscher Heilbäderverband, the German Spa Association.

The legend

A horse named Kulaš

The story of how Banja Kulaši got its name, as it has been told for generations.

  1. 01

    Warm springs in untouched nature

According to legend, long ago, in the untouched natural surroundings of today’s spa, there were natural pools filled with warm, healing water.

  2. 02

An old horse falls into the pool

One day an old and sick horse named Kulaš fell into one of these pools. He was so weak that he could not stand up, so he stayed lying in the water, surrendering himself to fate.

  3. 03

    The water begins to work

But the water had remarkable power. After several days in the warm, mineral-rich water, Kulaš began to regain his strength.

    04

    Kulaš rises again

He rose from the pool and lived for many more years in good health and vitality. From that day on, the place was named after the horse: Banja Kulaši. The water has remained unchanged, continuing to heal, restore and inspire hope, just as it did centuries ago.

Historical context

A tradition reaching back to antiquity

Immediately beside the present-day spa lies the Gradina archaeological site, where a Roman fortress once stood. Archaeological research, including microscopic analyses and the discovery of ancient tools and Roman coins, provides compelling evidence of life in that period.

Finds at Gradina and right beside the thermal springs confirm that Roman legions used this warm water to treat and rehabilitate their soldiers. From those ancient times, through the writings of Lazo Nenadović in 1936, to the modern complex, Banja Kulaši has remained an enduring union of nature and medicine.
